Carré Manchot is a traditional dance music band from Brittany; it was founded in 1986 by Remi MARTIN (box accordion), Jean-Claude RIOU (fiddle), Herve LE LU (bombarde) and Gilbert LE PENNEC (guitar), who still plays with the band today. The same year, they produced their first recording: "Tabalich".
In 1988, Remi and Jean-Claude left and were replaced by Ronan ROBERT (box) and Ronan PINC (fiddle). After two albums ("Mab ar Miliner" and "An Disparti"), both Ronan left the band and three musicians joined: Yannig ALORY (wooden flute), Erwan VOLANT (bass) and Yann-Loïc JOLY (box accordion). Together they released five albums: "Noz!" (1996), "Riboul!" (1997),"Liyannaj" (1999, featuring Guadeloupean group "Akiyo Ka" and breton singer Patrick Marie), "Degemer" (2001), "Liyannaj Live" (2003). In 2005, Stéphane SOTIN (percussions) replaced Erwan Volant and in 2006, Carré Manchot recorded a new album "Laÿoù" and celebrated their 20th anniversary on July the 13th in Mûr-de-Bretagne, along with many Breton musicians and bands.
In 2007, Herve LE LU, founding member, and Stephane SOTIN, percussionist, hit the road for some new musical adventures...
Uilleann piper Loïc BLEJEAN joined in January 2007.This new line-up keeps playing with the same energy that has made Carré Manchot one of the most acclaimed Breton music band for more than twenty years on the dance floors of festou noz in Brittany and elsewhere…

Cassandra Wilson's Loverly is amongst the singer's most straight-ahead and stripped down albums since her debut for Blue Note fifteen years ago with Blue Light 'Til Dawn (Blue Note, 1993). Self-produced, and recorded in a rented house in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi with little artifice, simple arrangements and a great sound, Wilson and a core quintet of regular playing partners deliver ten standards, Robert Johnson's "Dust My Blues," and one band original, the West African-derived "Arere."

Wilson hasn't sounded this good for some time—elegant, unforced and buoyant. And in the rhythm. Most of the tracks are underpinned by kit drummer Herlin Riley and Nigerian drummer and percussionist Lekan Babalola. Wilson calls herself the "unproducer," but her decision to create Loverly's arrangements from the drums up, starting with rhythm patterns suggested by Babalola and Riley, contributes immensely to a set shot through with mettle.

The drummers are joined by two more class acts, guitarist Marvin Sewell and pianist Jason Moran. Chicago-born Sewell brings a down home directness to the music, Moran a measure of unpredictability. It's an effective combination. Sewell is nicely nasty on a funked-up "St. James Infirmary" (which also features a gutsy cameo from trumpeter Nicholas Payton) and doffs his hat stylishly to slide guitarist Elmore James on "Dust My Broom." Moran solos with abandon on "Caravan" and "Infirmary," and more reflectively on "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most."

Wilson herself brings fresh air to some very familiar material. She's utterly poised and in control at slow tempos—as on the gorgeous "Black Orpheus," "'Til There Was You" and a definitive "The Very Thought Of You," given a deliciously slow reading accompanied only by bassist Reginald Veal. And she kicks it out with elan at faster tempos, like the opening "Lover Come Back To Me."

Positivity and good humor permeate practically every track. Even "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" is celebratory and heartwarming, refreshingly free of the pathos with which it is more usually tinged. (Wilson is pictured sitting in the song's "one enormous chair" on the cover).

"St. James Infirmary" and "Dust My Broom" are a little darker, but they too have a vitality which is infectious. Even "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" sounds like something to move forward from rather than something sorrowful to get stuck in.

Great songs, great singing, and a great band. Lovely indeed.

3 апреля в концертном зале «У Финляндского вокзала» (Арсенальная наб.,13, к.1) в 19.00 состоится премьера первого в России бретонского танцевально-музыкального спектакля «Женитьба Анку». На одной сцене — танцоры студии старинного и народного танца Persona Viva (Санкт-Петербург) и музыканты группы Mervent (Москва). Спектакль поставлен по одноименной легенде в переводе с бретонского Анны Мурадовой. Режиссёр — Александрова Екатерина, руководитель студии Persona Viva.

Бретань — провинция Франции, сохранившая свой язык, историю и культуру. Анку — мужской персонаж, олицетворение смерти в бретонском фольклоре.

О сюжете.
Жил на свете Пьер и была у него сестра. Не верил Пьер ни в Бога, ни в Дьявола, и бедняков не жаловал. После смерти родителей, сестра вышла замуж за странного нелюдимого человека. Муж её с утра уходил неизвестно куда и возвращался лишь под вечер. А Пьеру приходилось работать за двоих. Не желая терпеть такую несправедливость, Пьер решил проследить за зятем. Чем это закончилось, вы узнаете из спектакля.

Билеты продаются в театральных кассах города и в театральном агенстве «Софит».

The group Startijenn is at the forefront of the Breton music scene and has become established as a standard to follow.
